Silent Hill HD Collection Apparently Isn’t Complete!

The Silent Hill HD Collection for the PS3 and Xbox 360 didn’t get fantastic critical reception despite the fact that it’s a port of two highly acclaimed games, Silent Hill 2: Restless Dreams and Silent Hill 3. Even the Silent Hill art director, Masahiro Ito complained about how poor the port was, complaining about the fog effects. Well now fans have something to blame it on.

The producer of the game, Tomm Julett, revealed that the HD Collection were based on incomplete code. In an interview, he talked about problems concerning the development of the game.

“We got all the source code that Konami had on file — which it turns out wasn’t the final release version of the games.”So during debug we didn’t just have to deal with the expected ‘porting’ bugs, but also had to squash some bugs that the original team obviously removed prior to release, but we’d never seen before. A lot of assets such as textures and sound had to be taken out of the compiled game, and that brings with it a host of unique issues, especially taken on top of the tricky coding workarounds at play in the original games. We certainly had our hands full. I think at one point Heather was blue.”

It’s a shame that it didn’t reach its full potential because these are two fondly remembered games that really raised the bar for the survival horror series. I’m sure many hardcore gamers wanted to relive Heather’s sexy beam in full 720p.

Square Enix Celebrates Final Fantasy’s 25th Anniversary!

A Japanese site just opened up for the 25th anniversary of Final Fantasy. It has a discography with every game and port as well as a section for related products. Square Enix CEO, Yoichi Wada, has a column on the site on the Creator’s Voice section.

“We’ll take the 25th anniversary as an opportunity to begin our walk towards the next 25 years,” wrote Wada. “In order to make the fans happy, we the developer have just one promise we can make. Outside of talent and ability, we will also make sure development is handled exclusively by creators who feel love of the FF series stronger than anyone else.”

It will be interesting to see what he actually means by this because the vague comment seems somewhat noncommittal, whether it is a remake or a small game or a collector’s set. The possibilities are infinite (except for a Final Fantasy VII remake).
