Survey of Japanese middle and high school girls shows that Vocaloid really is the music of the future

In May, an ASCII Media Works online survey sampled 1,636 Japanese middle school girls, and 1,780 high school girls. The results were:
- 70.7% of middle school girls are familiar with Vocaloid. 24.1% aren’t familiar with Vocaloid, but do know Hatsune Miku.
- 61.3% of high school girls are familiar with Vocaloid. 29.2% just know about Miku.
- 54% of middle school girls and 44% of high school girls “like” or “love” Vocaloid songs.
- Among those who like or love Vocaloid songs, 60% say that they sing Vocaloid songs at karaoke, and 19.2% draw Vocaloid fanart.

Such a high percentage of young girls being familiar with and liking Vocaloid speaks well for the future of the software and digitally produced music. It’s awesome that Vocaloid, which leaves the music creation almost entirely to the layperson, is becoming accepted and enjoyed to this extent. Now we just need to work on bringing those numbers up overseas!
